The Library has long offered two programs that have been very popular with older adults: Laughs at the Library with comedian Mark Brier and the monthly Classic Film program with film historian John Carpenter. John Carpenter, host of the library’s Classic Film Series, was acknowledged at the Library on June 6, 2014 by the New York Veteran Police Association. Mr. Richie Ornstein, 1st Vice President of the association, presented Mr. Carpenter with an Appreciation Award for his efforts in keeping the memory of classic films alive. Mr. Ornstein is also producer and ex co-host of Joe Franklin’s WOR radio show Memory Lane. He presented Mr. Carpenter a gift of appreciation from Mr. Franklin’s memorabilia collection for his work in promoting classic films to the Long Island community.
The East Meadow Union Free School District has posted their Continuing Education Spring Course Brochure. Catalogs are no longer mailed, so make sure you check out the course offerings online or visit the Library to peruse a printed copy.

On June 7, 2013, the Library hosted a Classic Film Series program entitled Carpenter On Carpenter. On a typical Classic Film Series afternoon, Mr. John Carpenter usually pulls a classic film or two out of his vast collection and shares these lost gems with all of us. Instead, the Library’s Public Relations Director, Jude Schanzer, decided to recognize the filmmaker, not the resident film historian. Mr. Carpenter’s award-winning silent film Late To Lunch was shown along with his documentary Smelling Like A Rose, which examines how Mr. Carpenter mentally and physically overcame the disastrous effects of being hit by a speeding automobile. Before the films were shown, Mr. Carpenter was presented with a Citation from Nassau County Legislators Norma Gonsalves (Presiding Officer, District 13) and Michael Venditto (District 12) for his work in promoting and preserving classic films. He was also recognized by the Lady of Lourdes Youth Group for his work at this Massapequa Park parish. Mr. Carpenter has been the Library’s Classic Film Series facilitator for nearly ten years.

A new new telephone scam is becoming very prevalent where a caller claims to be from a software or technology company and indicates that a computer in your home is infected with a virus or malware. This type of phone call is a scam.

Three new electronic resources were recently added to the Library’s website: Morningstar Investment Research Center, Value Line Investment Survey, and ABMS Directory.
Morningstar evaluates more than 385,000 investment offerings, mutual funds and stocks. When you use Morningstar, you can access investment planning tools and guidance as well as comprehensive financial information on hundreds of exchange traded funds and portfolios, which will help you with your investment strategy.
Value Line can be used as your personal online investment management tool helping you, as an investor, make better informed decisions. Electronic offerings include easy access to Value Line investment analyzers and industry experts as well as their predictions of stock performance going forward.
Through ABMS (American Board of Medical Specialties), find out where and when a board certified doctor went to medical school and where he/she received additional training as well as their office contact information.

The East Meadow Fire Department will be hosting a disaster drive for the victims of Hurricane ‘Sandy’ beginning on Sunday, November 4th and continuing through the week. People wishing to donate may bring their contributions to the East Meadow Fire Department Headquarters located at 197 East Meadow Avenue, East Meadow, which is the firehouse next to the East Meadow Public Library. Items of necessity include bottled water, non-perishable food, clothing (especially jackets), blankets, toiletries, sanitary napkins, flashlights, batteries, as well as diapers, bottles and baby formula.
NOTE: Please do not drop off donations on Election Day as the firehouse is a polling location, otherwise, donations may be accepted between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
